Desperate times in a ratings war
Wednesday, April 16th, 2008It looked, for all the world, like a dramatic shake-up that would radically change the face of RTE television. Popular shows like ‘Lost’ and ‘Desperate Housewives’ were reportedly about to be displaced, advertisers were reportedly about to be scared away from RTE and the national broadcaster was reportedly on the verge of becoming a network purely for the middle classes, boasting marathon five-hour sessions of ‘Questions & Answers’ along with ‘Noddy’ re-runs.
All because Communications Minister Eamon Ryan told a Sunday newspaper the national broadcaster should prioritise “public service content” and can’t “just go chasing ratings”.
As controversy mounted in the aftermath of the comments, Ryan presented himself at a major broadcasting conference in a bid to calm the furore.
Ive always been of the opinion that Desperate Housewives really needs more fisticuffs, and now it appears I may get my wish. Chris Carmack, who spent most of The O.C.s first season sparring with Seth and/or Ryan (before they all became besties), is coming to Wisteria Lane. According to TV Guides Ausiello Report, Carmack has signed on for a recurring role as Susans cousin Tim, who shows up to help her with hertaxes? I dont know; maybe he brawls with Mike over whether or not rehab is a deductible expense. Carmack seems to have completely graduated into adult roles, as the producers are also looking to cast a teenage version of Tim. Apparently, there is a traumatic event in his past that Tim witnessed that will play a part in his storyline. Since they cant have him be a love interest for Julie and the perils of the 1040 only go so far, lets hope that this traumatic event is sufficiently juicy.
